ABOUT

Hello, and thank you for visiting my site. I am not one to talk too much about myself but I will do my best to describe what inspires my work, technique, and my life.

Every artist is inspired by different things, I am no exception. My inspiration comes from being in nature and surrounded by wildlife. I have a passion for fishing and being on the water. While on the water I often study the shapes and light of the tides and currents. If I’m lucky enough to catch a fish... I hold it up, tilting the fish back and forth in the sunlight, revealing all the colors and patterns. This love affair with nature is a symbiotic relationship that only enhances the organic qualities of watercolor.

Although watercolors can be an unforgiving medium my painting technique is actually quite simple. The most important step is to plan ahead. Sketching the subject matter several times to ensure the placement, size, and cropping enhances the overall layout. I then transfer the final sketch to 100% cotton rag paper. I then begin with light washes of the background, middle ground, and foreground. The love comes when the details and shadows are painted.

I was born with a love of nature. I spent most summers camping, hiking, and fishing. I also don’t remember a time when I did not love art and drawing. My teachers would often state, “Stephanie turned-in her work but there are always drawings in the margins…” So naturally Art School and a BFA was a “no brainer”. I then worked several years as a graphic designer in Colorado. I recently became semi-retired and moved to Port Charlotte in Southwest Florida. Now catching tarpon, snook, redfish, and shark are a weekly pursuit!
